First time pregnancy Book

What to Expect When You're Expecting: Fourth Edition
"What to Expect started with information--or, actually, lack of information. In fact, when I found out I was expecting for the first time--I didn't have the slightest idea of what to expect. And back then, it wasn't as easy to find out what to expect as you'd think. I created What to Expect When You're Expecting because I couldn't find the answers to my questions or the reassurance for my worries that I was searching for in the pregnancy books I read (and believe me, I read plenty). I was a mom on a mission--a mission to help other moms and dads worry less and enjoy their pregnancies (and their babies, and their toddlers) more. And I've been on that mission ever since."
--Heidi Murkoff
Testimonies:
It's incredible to me how many reviewers have said that this book frightened them. I've only read the 4th edition so I can't speak for earlier editions (which I've heard were a bit stricter in the diet section), but no other pregnancy book reassured me the way this one did. I've read both mainstream medical pregnancy books (including the "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy") and pro-natural childbirth/anti-hospital books (including "Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way"), and this book made me feel the most empowered. I found the medical books too dry and impersonal, while the anti-hospital books shame you for wanting a doctor around. "What to Expect" is a textbook-like reference guide, that yes, does have cutesy language, but I think the authors did that intentionally to make the information more accessible. For women who believe knowledge is power, this is the book for you; I can't recommend it highly enough. (And sometimes the cutesy anecdotes made me smile. They're not all bad.) --Kristin

Personal Opinion:
We found a previous version of this book back in 2008 when our first girl (Sophia)was in my bally!! and it was so amazing and helpful, now we are expecting Manuella and we found a new version of the book!! I found this book extremely helpful with a sense of humor.  It is an excellent resource for pregnancy, the chapters are well categorized and even has week by week section with everything you should know to be well prepared. I really think is a great resourse and you could by your What to Expect When You're Expecting: Fourth Edition directly from Amazon.com

Can You Really Choose Your Baby's Gender?

choose baby gender Gender selection of children is a controversial topic, particularly in terms of genetic therapy and the ethics of picking the sex of your child. While there certainly have been advances in the field of genetics, there are actually some natural and completely ethical things that you can do that will increase the likelihood of selecting a gender for your child.

While no method is 100% accurate, if you are determined to have a boy or a girl, there are a few things that can be done to significantly increase your chances of conceiving the gender of your choice. Remember, the most important thing is to have a healthy baby, regardless of their gender. But if you do want to try to pick the gender of your child, it is possible. Here's what you need to know.

Differences in Sperm

The sperm that carry the Y chromosome are the "boy" sperms, while the ones that carry the X chromosome are the "girl" sperms. The Y sperm are faster, smaller, more agile but they do not last as long as the "girl" sperm. The X sperm are bigger and move quite slowly. In addition to their overall speed, they have different preferences in terms of the acidity of the vagina and cervix. An X sperm does better in an acidic environment while the Y sperm prefer an alkaline environment.

How These Differences Affect Conception

Now that we have established the differences between the sperm that carry different chromosomes, it is important to understand how these differences can be used for natural gender selection. Once you have this information, you can begin trying to conceive a child that will be a specific gender.

If you want to have a boy, the timing is crucial. Since these sperm do not live long, it is vital to time your intercourse as closely to ovulation as possible. This gives the Y sperm time to reach the egg before the X sperm do, increasing the chances that you will have a boy.

If you want to have a girl, you need to give the X sperm plenty of time to reach the egg. Since they live longer, this means that you want to time intercourse a few days before expected ovulation. By the time you ovulate, the Y sperm will have already died off, leaving only the X sperm behind. They will have the time needed to travel up through the cervix to reach the egg and fertilize it.

Choosing the gender of your baby will help you  to get the right personalized baby gift

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (September 9th World Day)

Do not let your baby suffers the Fetal Alcohol syndrome

fetal alcohol syndrome

NanyCrafts joins the commemoration of the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) world day, which is celebrated on September 9th of each year to remind the community about the negative effect on babies who have been exposed to alcohol prenatally.  Fetal Alcohol syndrome affects more than 10% of U.S children whose mothers have consumed alcohol on their pregnancy.

but, what exactly is Fetal Alcohol syndrome?

in 1973, Jones and Smith (1) coined the term "fetal alcohol syndrome" (FAS) to describe a pattern of abnormalities observed in children born to alcoholic mothers. It was originally postulated that malnutrition might be responsible for these defects. However, the pattern of malformation associated with FAS is not seen in children born to malnourished women, and alcohol has been found to be acutely toxic to the fetus independently of the effects of malnutrition.

Criteria for defining Fetal Alcohol Syndrome were standardized by the Fetal Alcohol Study Group of the Research Society on Alcoholism in 1980 (2), and modifications were proposed in 1989 by Sokol and Clarren.

The proposed criteria are:

  1. Prenatal and/or postnatal growth retardation (weight and/or length below the 10th percentile).

  2. Central nervous system involvement, including neurological abnormalities, developmental delays, behavioral dysfunction, intellectual impairment, and skull or brain malformations.

  3. A characteristic face with short palpebral fissures (eye openings), a thin upper lip, and an elongated, flattened midface and philtrum (the groove in the middle of the upper lip).

Abstaining is the Key to your baby does not develop the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

A possible way to overcome denial might be to inquire about past, rather than present, drinking. Dr Robles, N in his Recall of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Journal of studies on alcohol in 1990 says:  This is suggested by the results of a study showing that self-reports of first trimester drinking made at the seventh month of pregnancy are often higher than those made at the fourth month. The researchers suggested that women may feel safer reporting higher levels of drinking farther away from the event.
